It's summer and I started wearing short skirts once again. One day I picked a short black A-line skirt and I called it "school skirt" when talking to M. He wondered what kind of skirt classification is that. Well, I spent some time pondering and I realized that I have indeed formed my own skirt classification. Here, I drew it out:
I wouldn't say there is only one variable that forms this classification, like length. Other factors, such as style and fit, are also considered. For now it seems that all skirts that I wear can be described as these types or a mix of two types. There are obviously skirts not covered by this set, but I probably don't wear them or don't even see them that much.
Now in more detail:
1) Slutty - in no way I mean it to be derogatory or imply I wouldn't wear it (but I don't currently have one of this type). This name suggests that this skirts in designed to be short, sexy, with stretchy fit, bottom-hugging.
2) Neutral/all-purpose - this skirt is right in the middle of everything, neutral length, neutral style, neutral fit. It does not define curves at all, it hits above the knee but stays modest.
3) Prudish - it hits well below the knee and is very form-concealing. I mainly see them on older women, don't think I have ever worn a piece like this. Maybe some flowy beachwear, though.
4) Black tie/Religious - long formal dress suitable for occasions. I have worn it once or twice (end of high school party, I guess).
5) Secretary/Pencil - hits at the knee or just below, very form fitting. You know the image, white blouse tucked into high-waisted pencil, low neckline, high heels. Sorry for cliches.
6) School girl - well, for me it's something black, rather short (not so short as the Slutty, though), sits high at the hips and A-line. Thin legs in tights (or bare with scrapes) sticking out.
7) Tulip - quite rare, I think, puffy at the hips.
8) Romantic/ballerina - hits at the middle of the leg, flowy, light, drapes nicely, allows movement.
My three most favorite types are School, Tulip and Ballerina.
